AAM: HOW DID ECCO BECOME ECCO?

ECCO: idk where or how ecco became what it is today acutally. I actually make typefaces and typograhpy, and one day I was just practing just making some random sh*t up, just creating ya know. One day I came across the name ecco and I thought man I should create something with this! I created the account october first 2020. At first ecco was meant to be a brand but that didnt go as planned so after that I thought ecco could be a design studio. But a design studio was too much work actually haha. Finally I said I’ll use this accout to share my references. My first post was suprisingly a major success. I posted a jet set raido ad poster that got around 600 likes. From there everyting just took off and now we’re at 200k followers, its kinda crazy to me actually!

AAM: DID YOU GO TO ART SCHOOL?

ECCO: Nah, I’m self taught. I started designing in 2017 on my phone. I just started my 2nd semester of art school but before that I didnt even have a laptop or anything. I just started going to the uni for art.

AAM: WHAT WAS IT ABOUT THE Y2K AESTHETIC THAT CAUGHT YOUR ATTENTION? Y2K SEEMS TO BE KEY FOR ECCO.

ECCO: I don’t eve know, I’m 18 turing 19 in november and a lot of the stuff I post on ecco is older that me for real. Like 10 years older. I think it started with my typeface design style. I was inspired by the Kyoto , he’s a brazilian designer. He helped me a lot when it comes to getting into the typeface world. His style still to this day is very Y2kish. He gave me his Pinstrest folder and from there I kept exploring the style more and more. I liked video games as a kid, GTA, Jet set radio, Grantrismo, all these things were influences for me.

AAM: WOULD YOU SAY Y2K AND VIDEO GAMES ARE A BIG INSPIRATION FOR YOUR GENERATION?

ECCO: oh yeah for sure. Y2k is so present right now...
